Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Endoscopy (ASGE 2015) 



Give Antibiotics: 

 - PEG tube placement (or PEG-J) 

 - Cirrhosis & GI bleeding 

 - EUS-FNA of pancreatic or mediastinal cysts 

 - Biliary obstruction without cholangitis: ERCP incomplete drainage anticipated 

 - Patient s/p liver transplant getting ERCP 

 - Peritoneal dialysis & colonoscopy 



Do Not Give Antibiotics: 

 - Vascular grafts/cardiac devices (ICD/pacers) 

 - Orthopedic prosthesis 

 - EUS-FNA of solid lesions (upper or lower GI tract) 

 - Biliary obstruction without cholangitis: ERCP complete drainage anticipated 



ASGE recommends against routine use of antibiotics to prevent endocarditis. (Unless in the setting of active GI infection and high risk cardiac conditions like congenital heart disease, prosthetic valve etc)
