  • The program has a dedicated rounding and admitter shift, night admissions average 5-8

  • No procedures except Thoracentesis and Paracentesis

The Medtech team currently covers 35-listed companies across a broad range of industries and subsectors within the medical technology sector including cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, diabetes, surgical robotics, general surgery, neurosurgery and several others. In addition to coverage of publicly traded companies, the team regularly vets a number of private device companies for potential IPOs. The candidate for the position should be intellectually curious and have a deep desire to learn. 


Although neither a basic science or direct medical background is required, it is very desirable as it shortens the learning curve and facilitates communication with companies and clients. Given the team’s heavy vetting load and fast pace nature of the medical device information cycle, the candidate should also have some experience with financial modeling and quantitative analysis, as well as strong verbal communication and writing skills. The ideal candidate possesses experience in Medtech sell-side research with a medical degree or medical or industry background. Medical areas of experience that are most valuable would be cardiovascular interventional medicine and diabetes. Further, the candidate should possess experience with company modelling and have a passion for following the stock market.


The candidate will work alongside Senior Analysts and Associates in all aspects of the research process, from idea generation to modeling, including but not limited to the following:

  • Perform complex financial modeling & valuation work.
  • Write regular industry and company reports and company launch initiations from scratch.
  • Develop databases integral to our research product.

  • Experience with Bloomberg and/or Factset tools a distinct positive

  • Strong writing and spreadsheet skills. Must be an expert at MS Word and MS Excel.

About this Role:

This position supports the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) mission and strategic plan by independently providing health informatics expertise, medical consultation, and technical assistance pertaining to health informatics, federal health initiatives, public health data and statistics, health care systems, and epidemiological research using Medi-Cal data and a variety of other public health and health care data sources. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Utilization Management will develop and manage efforts to improve and maintain cost and utilization trends. Responsible for URAC, NCQA, state departments of insurance, and similar accreditors/regulators for the performance of all utilization management (UM) programs across the enterprise.  The CMO is individually responsible for overall clinical compliance within the UM programs, including matters concerning clinical policy, quality management (QM), program development, review of UM cases, clinical criteria, and provider issues, and always ensuring the clinical integrity and compliance of the programs.

Physician’s Development Program Overview


AbbVie’s Physician’s Development Program (PDP) is a robust, two-year rotational program specifically targeting Medical Doctor (M.D.) specialist talent (graduating fellows). Those who have completed a M.D. program will also be considered.


The goal of the program is to develop and support high-potential specialist physician talent in transitioning to a successful career within R&D at AbbVie. To that end, participants will engage in thoughtful, impactful rotational assignments within core R&D sub-functions, including Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics, Pharmacovigilance, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, and Clinical Development (both early and late stage.)


In addition to gaining critical cross-functional knowledge and exposure, the program also features a multi-level mentorship program and professional development sessions focused on honing leadership skills. This program and all rotations will be based at AbbVie’s headquarters in North Chicago, IL.


AbbVie is seeking physician talent with specializations in one or more of the following Therapeutic Areas: Oncology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Dermatology, or Gastroenterology. Participants will enter the program as Associate Medical Directors with the opportunity to graduate into a Medical Director position upon successful completion of the program, should performance dictate.


Responsibilities while in-program could include:

  • With appropriate supervision, help design and implement study protocols for a development program in support of the overall Product Development Plan, based on strong medical and scientific principles, knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements, AbbVie’s customers, markets, business operations, and emerging issues. Oversees project-related education of investigators, study site personnel, and AbbVie study staff.
  • Help oversee clinical studies, supporting the monitoring of overall study integrity, review, interpretation and communication of accumulating data pertaining to safety and efficacy of the molecule. Partner with Clinical Operations to oversee study enrollment and overall timelines for key deliverables.
  • Participate in design and execution of clinical trial safety, product safety, and risk management plans. Responsible for routine and ad hoc safety monitoring reports to regulatory agencies. May review, assess and report applicable Adverse Events (AE’s) and Serious Adverse Events (SAE’s) if assigned to AbbVie conduct on clinical studies.
  • Contribute to the design, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of scientific content of protocols, Investigator Brochures, Clinical Study Reports, regulatory submissions and responses, and other program documents.
  • May interact with and help coordinate appropriate scientific and medical activities with internal stakeholders (i.e. commercial, clinical operations, discovery, statistics, regulatory, etc.) as they relate to ongoing medical affairs projects. May assist as consultant/liaison with other corporations when working under licensing agreements and/or in the evaluation of new business development opportunities.
  • May assist in scientific/medical education of investigators, clinical monitors, and Asset Development Team members related to therapeutic area or disease specific information. Keeps abreast of professional information and technology through conferences and/or medical literature and acts as a therapeutic area resource.
  • Understand the regulatory requirements related to the clinical studies; accountable for complying with those requirements.
  • May represent the medical function on cross-functional integrated teams for medical affairs activities. May represent AbbVie at external meetings including investigator meetings, scientific association meetings, etc.
  • May assist in the development of scientifically accurate marketing materials, medical education programs, advisories, and symposia. May assist with the scientific review, development, execution and communication of affiliate/area/global medical affairs sponsored or supported clinical research activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. Candidates with an international equivalent medical degree that meets U.S. certification standards can also be considered

  • Serves as executive sponsor for high profile East Coast Region accounts.
  • In collaboration with the Head of PPD Biotech, plays leadership role in proposal development and bid defense for key business opportunities. Attends and presents sponsor meetings, provides medicines and device development consultation to clients and project team members in direct support of sales efforts.
  • Serves as a regional medical market leader to business development for Biotech East Coast Region. Plays a leadership role in developing and retaining new accounts
  • Works with key stakeholders to develop strategic selling opportunities focused on PPD Biotech East Coast Region -develops and leads regional client events focused on medical scientific topic under the PPD Biotech brand.
  • Technical sales role partnering with business development giving client’s access to Biotech focused clinical expertise thereby increasing our credibility and investment in this client segment.
  • Supports commercial objectives and shares a sales target with the head of PPD Biotech East Coast Region
  • Builds a strong scientific network within East Coast Region Biotech community
  • Broad remit over all therapeutic areas and interfaces effectively with key internal directorates including Operations, Biometrics, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, and Global Product Development to ensure the best proposals and plans are developed for clients.
  • Ensures the proper level of scientific support is delivered in the award and execution process
  • Promotes innovation and works with Medical Officer PPD Biotech to move PPD in a direction to be more efficient and effective with the Biotech client base.
  • Establishes strategy and direction for assigned areas in alignment with strategic plans established by senior management.
  • Broad function-wide objectives and assignments are established under the general senior management direction and guided by approved operating plans. Work is reviewed upon completion for meeting timelines, adequacy, and objectives
  • Develops and manages interpersonal relationships to influence decisions of senior leaders both within and outside of the company.

Qualifications

  • Medical Doctorate or PhD relevant to drug development or medical specialization required.
  • Suitable clinical experience in drug development (comparable to 10+ years).
  • Demonstrates a strong network and connectivity to Biotech and mid-size pharma market and key stakeholders (CMOs and CSOs of such companies).
  • Experience managing client relationships is critical.
  • Thorough understanding of overall biologic/pharmaceutical product development process from pre-clinical through post-marketing, including all stages of development and all functional roles
  • Therapeutic and indication-specific development expertise across one or more therapeutic areas and one or more drug classes
  • Deep knowledge of clinical program and study design, relevant endpoints, safety considerations and current regulatory and commercial landscape
  • Commercial acumen and proven ability to establish productive relationships with clients, internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong decision-making and analytical skills

Directly reporting to the CEO, the Chief Health Officer will lead the organization’s Enterprise Medical Teams including primary care, behavioral health, physical therapy, health coaching, occupational health services, and patient safety & quality assurance.  The ideal candidate will be based in our downtown Indianapolis office. Qualifications
  • Must be a licensed primary care Physician: MD or DO required.
  • Current and unrestricted licensure nationally and current Board Certification with preference for Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or related field preferred.
  • Experience as a CHO, CMO or equivalent role in a national, multi-site clinical service organization required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidenced-based population health management and value-based care.
  • 10+ years of clinical practice in primary care.
  • 10+ years of experience in healthcare leadership including direct management of collaborative care teams including physicians, advanced practice providers, behavioral health specialists, physical therapists, and other clinical professionals.
  • Exceptional communication skills with both clinical and non-clinical audiences, decisive prioritization, and ability to formulate and maintain challenging decision, i.e. say no.
  • Have a strong growth mindset, and customer service orientation.
  • Mission-driven; highly collaborative, high IQ/EQ mix.
  • Proven track record of leading successful change management specific to clinical professionals.
  • Familiar with comparative payment and reimbursement models and able to develop creative financial methodologies that align incentives and drive improvement.
