Myotomes of the Spinal Cord

Each segmental nerve root innervates more than one muscle. For simplicity, certain muscles or muscle groups are identified as representing a single spinal nerve root. External anal sphincter tone should also be assessed by digital examination. Note that the spinal cord ends at Ll (below this is the cauda equina). The cauda equina is more resilient to injury than the spinal cord.
