Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS)

The kidneys produce renin in response to low blood pressure or low plasma Na concentrations. Renin acts on angiotensin in plasma to form angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is converted to angiotensin II in the lungs by the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II acts as a hormone and a neurotransmitter on different organs to produce changes that help restore blood pressure and Na+.
