The Chief Medical Director provides expert medical knowledge for life and health risk selection, claims management, and product development. This includes research and develop medical impairment guidelines, develop training programs for underwriters and claims examiners, and assist in insurance mortality knowledge.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Identify medical information relevant for claims and underwriting reviews, provide advanced medical knowledge and training for underwriters and claims examiners using novel scalable formats
- Establishes medical underwriting guidelines appropriate to the organization's products and risk appetite
- Provides expert medical risk consultation on underwriting by demonstrating ability to translate medical advances and various data sources into updated and enhanced guidelines, and provide thought leadership for best medical decisions
- Keep current with general medical literature, develop subject matter expertise, advanced proficiency in evaluation quality and insurance relevance of research studies
- Identify relevant medical topics, medical advances and emerging risks, provide concise relevant updates for stakeholders, thought leadership on strategic direction
- Further develop business acumen, provide medical expertise to novel ways of doing business, contribute to risk mitigation strategies, lead fair risk assessment initiatives
- Be a visible leader in the insurance medicine community and build on DBIM with industry thought leadership
- Oversee, mentor and develop a team of medical professionals
Qualifications:
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school with 5+ years clinical experience in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
- Current and comprehensive knowledge of medical literature
- Effective written and oral communication both with formal and informal groups
Preferred Qualifications:
- MD (or DO) with active US medical license
- 5+ years’ experience in insurance medicine
- Board of insurance medicine certification (DBIM)
- Recognized as an expert or leader in the life insurance industry or medical community due to publications, presentations, or involvement in industry or medical organizations
Physical job requirements:
- Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
- Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for up to 3-6 hours per day
- Ability to utilize telephone for approximately 1-3 hours per day
- Ability to perform simple grasping including handwriting, paper manipulation, sorting, folding, etc. periodically throughout entire workday
