The American Medical Association seeks an Editor in Chief (“EIC”) of JAMA®, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the JAMA Network. The EIC will lead one of the most prestigious groups of scientific publications in medicine with a unique opportunity to define and implement a vision for the future of medical journalism.

The Opportunity

The Editor in Chief (EIC) will provide editorial direction of JAMA®, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the JAMA Network by selecting editors and other key staff, providing guidance, and defining editorial goals. The EIC also will supervise selection and review of journal-based information. The EIC will ensure the quality, relevance, and integrity of content and will protect and strengthen the integrity and quality of JAMA and the JAMA Network and their processes, policies, and procedures. Perhaps most important, the EIC will lead JAMA and the JAMA Network into the future. They will interface with the Senior Vice President and Executive Publisher, Publishing and Mission Operations, and the Publisher and publishing staff to establish future needs and will set and pursue short-term and long-term goals to ensure viability of JAMA and the JAMA Network Journals.

Following the accomplishments of the last 10 years, JAMA and the JAMA Network have an opportunity to build on the foundation as global leaders in medical publishing, under new EIC leadership. Challenges and opportunities for the new EIC include a new trajectory of progress in all of the areas listed above; prioritization of new ideas and innovation and identifying benchmarks and resources required for success; understanding the increasingly complex nature of medical research especially as it affects public health and patient care; understanding and working with the Publisher to manage threats to the future of the journals; understanding and supporting the Publisher to manage the finances and business models of the journals; partnering with the Publishing team to promote innovation to improve the content, reach, and revenue potential for the journals; furthering aims to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion; and leading editors and editorial staff through the uncertainties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, return to office, and the change in editorial leadership.

Major Responsibilities

The EIC will have editorial responsibilities which include:

  • Providing overall editorial direction for JAMA and the JAMA Network.
  • Supervising the review and selection of compelling content for JAMA and the JAMA Network for delivery in print, online, and via mobile devices.
  • Protecting and strengthening the editorial integrity, quality, and relevance of JAMA and the JAMA Network independent of any special interests.
  • Publishing original, important, valid, peer-reviewed articles on a diverse range of medical topics.
  • Fostering and leading the development of scholarship published in JAMA Network journals that enhances health equity and dismantles structural racism in medical education, research, clinical care, health policy, and society.
  • Leading, promoting, and addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion among authors, reviewers, editorial leadership, editorial boards, and staff, ensuring a culture that identifies and remedies bias.
  • Writing editorials and other articles for inclusion in JAMA and the JAMA Network journals.
  • Growing readership and usage through innovative and creative editorial features and applications.
  • Recruiting, hiring, retaining, and guiding the editors and editorial staff of JAMA and the JAMA Network.
  • Recruiting and appointing editorial board members for JAMA and approving editorial board members nominated by the editors of the JAMA Network.
  • Representing JAMA within emerging areas of scholarship and the international medical journal community. Collaboratively lead efforts in those communities to address issues of scholarship (including open access, preprints, funder mandates, etc.) and ethics (including equity and anti-racism).
  • Maintaining and furthering journal relationships with national and international medical specialty societies, research organizations, and governmental and nongovernmental agencies.
  • Interfacing with the Senior Vice President and Executive Publisher, Publishing and Mission Operations, and working with the Publisher to establish an integrated strategy, a vital, inclusive, and collaborative culture, and ensure the long-term financial sustainability of JAMA and the JAMA Network.
  • Recruiting and managing reviewers and working to improve their participation.

The EIC also will have the following promotional and planning/strategic charges:

  • Engaging influential authors to solicit high-quality research and clinically relevant content as measured by article views and downloads, citations, and media coverage.
  • Partnering with the Publisher to develop and implement strategies for promoting JAMA and the JAMA Network to authors, readers, listeners, viewers, librarians, advertisers, policymakers, and news media to attract quality content, help sustain the journal business model, and strengthen the JAMA brand.
  • Working with editorial and publishing staff to ensure JAMA and the JAMA Network continue to innovate and model technological leadership within the scientific and clinical community.
  • Recommending product enhancements and potential new products and publications for consideration and working with the Publisher and within the AMA business management structure to develop business and operating plans.

Reporting Relationship

For all editorial matters, including annual performance evaluation, the Editor in Chief reports the independent Journal Oversight Committee. For business and financial operations, the Editor and Chief reports to the Senior Vice President and Executive Publisher, Publishing and Mission Operations.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • An MD, MD/PhD, or DO with distinguished academic credentials, background, and experience
  • Clinical training and robust clinical experience. Ideally, board certified in a specialty or sub- specialty. Preferably some experience in both clinical care and in the management of clinical programs.
  • Demonstrated track record of academic and clinical excellence, including faculty research, teaching experience, and consistent activity in clinical medicine. Current or prior academic appointment at the Professorial level.
  • Understands the competitive landscape and can anticipate and articulate the critical issues, opportunities, and threats in the foreseeable future.
  • Editorial experience as an editor or member of the editorial board of a well-regarded medical journal. Advanced editing skills and editorial judgment required.
  • Experience conducting research on topics of clinical relevance (measured by readership), respected in the field (measured by citations), and published in top journals (JAMA, NEJM, The Lancet).
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and a commitment through past experience, activities, and future plans to advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage complex, high-profile issues and problems, and to navigate conflict, prioritize multiple competing demands and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders.
