Conductive vs Sensorineural Hearing Loss on Physical Exam

Weber Test:

 • Normal: Sound is equal bilaterally

 • Conductive: Sound lateralizes to impaired ear

 • Sensorineural: Sound lateralizes to good ear

Rinne Test:

 • Normal: Air conduction lasts longer than bone conduction

 • Conductive: Bone conduction lasts longer or is equal to air conduction

 • Sensorineural: Air conduction lasts longer than bone conduction

Hum Test:

 • Normal: Sound is equal bilaterally

 • Conductive: Sound lateralizes to impaired ear

 • Sensorineural: Sound lateralizes to good ear
