Causes of Hypomagnesemia - Differential Diagnosis Algorithm

GI LOSS - FeMg < 2-2.5% or 24h Urine Mg < 10g

 • Diarrhea

 • PPI use

 • Malabsorption

RENAL LOSS - FeMg > 2-2.5% or 24h Urine Mg > 10g

 • Loop Diuretics

 • Hypercalcemia-PTH effect

 • Cisplatin, Amp B, Pentamadine, CNIs

 • Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC)

 • Gitelman's syndrome

 • Thiazide Diuretics

 • Cetuximab and other EGFR ab

 • Genetics defects in Na-KATPase, EGFR,HNF-1beta, cyclin M2
