Trachoma: Pathogenesis and clinical findings



 • Environmental Factors -> Bacterial infection is encouraged by poor hygiene and overcrowding in a hot, dry climate

 • Vectorial Transmission -> Eye-seeking flies (ex. Musca sorbens) transmit bacterium

 • Disease Reservoir -> Bacteria is transferred from person to person, usually from nasal or ocular secretions

=> Chlamydia trachomatous infection

-> Follicles (collections of lymphocytes) appear in the superior tarsal conjunctiva, progressing to papillae -> Pannus (invasion by superficial vessels) of the limbal cornea -> Scarring of the peripheral cornea -> Extensive upper tarsal conjunctival scarring -> Subconjunctival fibrosis

=> 

 • Corneal trauma

 • Decreased Lubrication 

 • Dry eye

=> Blindness
