Relative Afferent Pupillary Defect

This maneuver of intermittent light stimulus is called the alternating light test or "swinging-flashlight test". This phenomenon of pupillary dilation that occurs instead of contraction to the light stimulus, is called Marcus Gunn's pupils or relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD).
It is a clear sign of unilateral anomaly in the afferent path of the pupillary reflex. A very sensitive diagnostic test, but not specific regarding the cause of the afferent pathway injury.
