TABLE 2. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) sub-classifications

lBS-diarrhoea (IBS-D)

 - >25% loose or watery stools; <25% hard or lumpy stools

 - Morning frequency, often with urgency

 - Usually accompanied by pain that is often relieved by defaecation

IBS-constipation (IBS-C)

 - >25% hard or lumpy stools; <25% loose or watery stools

 - Most common in women

 - Sensation of incomplete evacuation

 - Associated with the passage of mucus

IBS-mixed (IBS-M)

 - >25% loose or watery stools; >25% hard or lumpy stools

 - Symptoms alternate between constipation and diarrhoea

 - Symptoms often involve the passage of hard stools in the morning, followed by increasingly loose or watery stools throughout the day

IBS-unclassified (IBS-U)

 - <25% loose or watery stools; <25% hard or lumpy stools

 - Insufficient abnormality of stool consistency to meet the criteria for IBS-C or IBS-M
