Tinea Versicolor (Pityriasis versicolor) 

NOT a dermatophyte infection 

Caused by saprophytic, lipid-dependent yeasts 

Clinical 

 • Involves trunk and extremities 

 • Typically hypopigmented 

 • Can be hyperpigmented or erythematous 

Diagnosis 

 • Potassium hydroxide (KOH) prep 

 • Spaghetti and meatballs appearance 

Management 

 • Topical antifungals 

 • Oral antifungal therapy (for severe or recalcitrant)
