5 P’s Mnemonic for Symptoms in Acute Intermittent Porphyria



Painful Abdomen - Colicky pain, sometimes out of proportion to exam.

Psychological Disturbances - Anxiety, depression, psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia

Pink (Port-wine) Urine - Due to accumulation of porphobilinogen and uroporphyrin.  Can turn dark red-brown after exposure to light.

Polyneuropathy - Peripheral neuropathy, motor more common than sensory.

Precipitated by drugs/alcohol - Barbiturates, alcohol, sulfa drugs, stress or hormonal (menstrual) changes.
