Vortex Airway Approach Optimization Strategies


The Vortex approach includes five optimisation strategies which can be applied to all the upper airway lifelines:


1. Manipulations: of head and neck (e.g. head lift, jaw thrust); larynx (e.g. bimanual laryngoscopy); and device (e.g. two-person technique, bougie left turn)


2. Adjuncts: (e.g. nasopharyngeal airway, laryngoscope for SAD, bougie


3. Size and type: of face mask, SAD, tube or laryngoscope


4. Suction


5. Pharyngeal Muscle Tone: consider increasing neuromuscular blockade
