HAS-BLED Score for Major Bleeding Risk of Anticoagulation in Atrial Fibrillation



A clinical mnemonic to estimate the risk of major bleeding with anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation.  A higher total score indicates a greater risk of major bleeding and argues against anticoagulation.



H - Hypertension (uncontrolled)

A - Abnormal renal or liver function (1 point each)

S - Stroke

B - Bleeding (prior major bleed)

L - Labile INRs

E - Elderly (Age > 65)

D - Drugs (Medications predisposing to bleeding, NSAIDs, anti-platelets) or Alcohol (1 point each)



HAS-BLED Score - Major Bleeding Risk

0 - 0.9 %

1 - 3.4 % 

2 - 4.1 %

3 - 5.8 %

4 - 8.9 %

5 - 9.1 %

≥6 - > 10%
