Hypopyon: A white layer of inflammatory cells which settles along the bottom of the anterior chamber (in front of the iris). 

This can occur secondary to a number of inflammatory processes (e.g. anterior uveits, keratitis, other). In the image shown above,

the hypopyon is the result of endophthalmitis, which is an infection within the eye resulting from either: bacteria entering directly from

outside the eye (e.g. as a complication of surgery or trauma), hematogenous seeding, or spread from contiguous structures. 

Note the profound chemosis (redness and edema of the conjunctiva). This patient presented with acute pain, redness and loss of vision.
