Endophthalmitis: Infection within the eye. This most commonly occurs via introduction of microbes from the outside

(e.g. as a complication of surgery or trauma), via hematogenous seeding or spread from contiguous structures. In the image above,

the infection is of bacterial origin and the patient presented with acute pain, redness and loss of vision. Note the profound chemosis 

(redness and edema of the conjunctiva). In addition, the patient has an easily visible hypoyon, a white layer of inflammatory cells in 

the anterior chamber (in front of the iris).
