Medications that Can Cause False Positives on Drug Tests



Urine drug screens (UDSs) are simple to use, easy to automate and provide rapid results but are subject to cross-reactivity with structurally related and unrelated compounds potentially yielding false-positive results.



What medications can cause false positives on drug tests?



Amphetamine false positives:

• Amantadine

• Aripiprazole

• Atomoxetine

• Brompheniramine

• Bupropion

• Chlorpromazine

• Desipramine

• DMAA

• Ephedrine

• Fluoxetine

• Labetalol

• Metformin

• Ofloxacin

• Phentermine

• Phenylephrine

• Phenylpropanolamine

• Promethazine

• Pseudoephedrine

• Ranitidine

• Selegiline

• Thioridazine

• Trazodone

• Nonprescription nasal Antihistamine/decongestant inhalation



Cannabinoid false positives:

• Cannabidiol (CBD) oil

• Hemp food products

• HIV medication like efavirenz (Sustiva)

• Pain medication like ibuprofen

• Proton-pump inhibitors, specifically pantoprazole (Protonix), may cause false-positive for THC

• Some vitamin B supplements that come from hemp seed oil



Benzodiazepine false positives:

• Ibuprofen

• Sertraline (Zoloft)

• Efavirenz, oxaprozin



Cocaine false positives:

• Coca tea



Buprenorphine false positives:

• Amisulpride

• Sulpiride

• Tramadol



Barbiturates false positives:

• Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin)

• Naproxen sodium (Aleve)

• Sleep aids: doxylamine (Unisom)



Methadone false positives:

• Diphenhydramine

• Doxylamine

• Chlorpromazine

• Clomipramine

• Doxylamine

• Quetiapine

• Thioridazine

• Verapamil



Opioids and opiates false positives:

• Quinolone antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections like levofloxacin (Levaquin) and ofloxacin

• Anti-psychotic medications like quetiapine (Seroquel)

• Over-the-counter antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

• Poppy seeds



LSD false positives:

• Ambroxol

• Amitriptyline

• Benzphetamine

• Bupropion

• Buspirone

• Cephradine

• Chlorpromazine

• Desipramine

• Diltiazem

• Doxepin

• Fentanyl

• Fluoxetine
