Ely's Test for Rectus Femoris Tightness



Patient lies prone on the table. The examiner flexes the leg towards the thigh, with the goal of the heel to touch the buttock. 

The test is positive if they are unable to flex to the buttock, if the hip raises off of the table, or with pain in the back or leg during testing.

A positive test indicates rectus femoris tightness, femoral nerve irritation or lumbar radiculopathy depending on the location of the symptoms.
