Froment’s Test for Ulnar Nerve Palsy



This tests for pinch grip weakness caused by ulnar nerve palsy, testing the strength of the adductor pollicus.

The patient is asked to grip a flat object such as a piece of paper, which the examiner pulls.

There is neuropathy if the patient is unable to hold onto the paper.

Froment's Sign is when the patient compensates by flexing the thumb (using the FPL).

Jeanne’s sign is when the patient compensates via MP joint hyperextension.
