History and Exam

Acute life-threatening causes:

 • Acute myocardial infarction

 • Aortic dissection

 • Pneumothorax

 • Pulmonary embolism

 • Cardiac tamponade

 • Esophageal rupture

Initial workup:

 • EKG

 • Bedside ultrasound

 • CXR

 • CBC, BMP, LET, lipase, PT. aPTT

 • Serial troponin; HEART score

 • PERC; Well score for PE

 • CTA/VQ scan
