Description
Hypermagnesemia - Diagnosis and Management Hypermagnesemia is a serum magnesium concentration > 2.6 mg/dL. Symptoms include hyporeflexia, hypotension, respiratory depression, and cardiac arrest. Mg >2.4 mg/dl independent predictors of 30-day in-hospital mortality in ICU Causes of Hypermagnesemia: • Increased magnesium load: Magnesium-containing laxatives, antacids, or enemas, Treatment of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (mothers and neonates), Diabetic ketoacidosis (untreated), Tumor lysis, Rhabdomyolysi • Increased renal magnesium absorption: Hyperparathyroidism, Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, Hypothyroidism, Mineralocorticoid deficiency, adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) Treatment includes IV calcium gluconate and possibly furosemide. Calcium gluconate may reverse Mg-induced changes, including respiratory depression. Hemodialysis can be helpful in severe cases.
