Magnesium Deficiency and Alcoholism Risks associated with Mg deficiency in alcoholism: • Affects protein synthesis. energy production, & cell function. • Contributes to increased HTN, atherosclerotic CVS disease & osteoporosis. • Predisposing factor for the development of alcohol-induced pathologies such as cardiomyopathy, sarcopenia, CVA & cirrhosis. • Depressive symptoms among alcoholics, especially during the withdrawal period can be attributed to Mg deficiency where Mg regulates the calcium ion stream towards the neuronal calcium channels. • Mg deficiency is shown to increased platelet aggregation that was normalized with Mg therapy & this antiplatelet effect may be related to the finding that Mg inhibits the synthesis of thromboxane A2 and 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid, & eicosanoids.
