Indications for Irradiated Blood Product Transfusion
Irradiation of blood is performed for only one reason: to prevent transfusion-associated graft-versus-host-disease (TA-GVHD). Patients with HIV infection do not get TA-GVHD and should NOT receive irradiated blood.
• Absolute Indications: Stem Cell Transplant Patients, Congenital immune deficiencies, Intrauterine transfusion, Transfusion from relatives, Hodgkin's disease (even in remission!)
• Probable indications: Hematological malignancies other than Hodgkin's disease, Patients receiving aggressive chemotherapy
