Approach to Hypomagnesemia 



Fractional excretion of magnesium = (urine magnesium x serum creatinine)/ [0.7 (serum magnesium x urine creatinine)] x 100

FEMg <2% = poor intake, Gl loss, shift of magnesium into cells

FEMg >4% = renal magnesium loss if renal function is normal
