How to Pronounce a Death - Checklist

The typical pronouncement exam:

 • Confirm patient ID

 • Check for response to tactile stimuli

 • Check pupils for position and response to light (should be fixed & dilated)

 • Palpate for pulse and watch for spontaneous respirations for at least 60 seconds (some recommend 2-3 min)

 • Listen for heart sounds for 60 seconds
